Venice is unique on Earth. A city built on 118 islands, connected by 400 bridges, with gondolas instead of cars. It's touristy, expensive, and crowded. It's also genuinely magical when you escape the main paths and let the labyrinthine alleys lead you somewhere unexpected. Venice is disappearing. Flooding worsens, tourists overwhelm, and residents flee. Visiting responsibly matters here more than anywhere. Come in shoulder seasons, wander away from San Marco, and spend money in local businesses. Flight deals to Venice appear on budget carriers.
Best Time to Fly to Venice
Peak Season
Carnival (February) and summer (June to August) bring maximum crowds. Easter and major holidays are packed.
Off Season (Best Deals)
November through January (except holidays) is quieter but prone to acqua alta (flooding). March and April after Carnival offer balance.
Summer (June to August) is hot and humid at 75-85°F. Fall (September to November) cools to 55-70°F with increasing rain. Winter (December to February) is cold at 35-50°F with fog and flooding risk. Spring (March to May) warms to 55-70°F.
💡Book Carnival months ahead. Summer requires 6-8 weeks advance booking. Winter offers deals but check flooding forecasts.

Must-Try Foods in Venice
Cicchetti
Venetian tapas: small bites served at bar counters with wine. Bacari (wine bars) specialize in them. Get baccala mantecato (creamed cod), sarde in saor (sweet and sour sardines), and polpette (meatballs). Stand at the bar like locals.
$2-5 each
Risotto al Nero di Seppia
Black risotto made with squid ink is dramatic and delicious. The color is startling but the seafood flavor is refined. Many restaurants serve it; look for busy local spots away from San Marco.
$18-28
Spaghetti alle Vongole
Spaghetti with fresh clams in white wine and garlic. Venice's lagoon setting means excellent seafood. Simple but perfect when done right. Avoid tourist traps; seek restaurants full of Italians.
$16-25
Top Attractions in Venice
St. Mark's Basilica
The Byzantine masterpiece glitters with gold mosaics. Book skip-the-line tickets online. The Pala d'Oro altar screen and museum/terrace require separate tickets but are worth it. Dress code enforced.
Doge's Palace
The Gothic palace housed Venice's rulers for centuries. The art, the Bridge of Sighs, and the prison cells tell the republic's story. Book timed entry online. The Secret Itineraries tour accesses hidden rooms.
Getting Lost in Venice
The best Venice experience is wandering. Put away the map and let the alleys lead you. Cross bridges, find hidden squares, stumble on local bars. Every wrong turn leads somewhere interesting.

Getting Around Venice
From the Airport
From Marco Polo: Alilaguna boats take 75 minutes to San Marco for $15-17. Water taxis cost $110+. ACTV bus to Piazzale Roma then vaporetto is cheapest. From Treviso: bus to Venice.
Getting Around
Walking is the only way through Venice proper. Vaporetti (water buses) connect major points and islands. Buy passes for multiple days. Water taxis are expensive but romantic. There are no cars or bikes.
Tips
- •Buy a vaporetto pass for unlimited rides. 24-hour ($25), 48-hour ($35), and 72-hour ($45) options exist.
- •Walk instead of taking vaporetti when possible. You'll see more and it's faster for short distances.
Where to Stay in Venice
San Marco
The famous square, basilica, and Doge's Palace are here. Tourist central but unmissable. Stay nearby for convenience but eat and drink elsewhere. The heart of Venice since forever.
Dorsoduro
The university district has Campo Santa Margherita with late-night bars and young energy. Quieter than San Marco with better value restaurants. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is here too.
Cannaregio
The northern district has the Jewish Ghetto, local restaurants, and fewer tourists. Fondamenta della Misericordia has cicchetti bars. Real Venice survives here. Get lost on purpose.
